What is a LED wall
A LED wall is a screen made of LED modules placed side by side: each pixel is a small group of LEDs that emits its own light. The modules fit together without bezels, so a LED wall can have almost any size and shape, from a shop window panel to a facade dozens of metres wide or a ribbon running around a stadium. Precisely because it has no standard format, a LED wall needs a player and software able to air content at unusual resolutions and proportions.
LED wall, video wall, large screen and monitor: the differences
LED wall: bezel-free LED modules, any shape and size, brightness suitable for outdoor use.
Video wall: several LCD monitors side by side; cheaper on small indoor surfaces, but the bezels between monitors remain visible.
Large screen: a generic term for a big display, today almost always a LED wall, for example in stadiums or city squares.
Professional monitor: standard format, built for continuous use in shops and offices; ideal for menu boards, departments and totems.
Pixel pitch and viewing distance
Pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres between the centre of one pixel and the next: the smaller it is, the sharper the image up close. A widely used rule of thumb says the minimum viewing distance in metres roughly equals the pitch in millimetres: a P2.5 looks good from about 2.5 metres, a P10 from about 10 metres. That is why small pitches are used inside shops and malls, while larger pitches are used on outdoor facades and large screens.
Besides pitch, brightness matters, as outdoors it must be much higher to stay readable in full sun, along with water and dust protection for outdoor installations and the overall resolution, which depends on pitch and size. The result is often non-standard resolutions: this is where you need a player that handles them without limits.
Where LED walls are used
Cities and DOOH
Facades, large screens and city installations: digital out of home advertising sold to several advertisers, with schedules by site and time slot.
Stadiums and arenas
LED perimeter boards, ribbons, scoreboards and large screens: sponsors rotating by the second and content that changes even mid-match.
Stores and grocery
LED walls in windows, in store and in mall galleries, to draw people in and sell space to brands as retail media.
What you need to put a LED wall on air
1. The LED panels and structure, sized on viewing distance and installation site.
2. The control system, which distributes the video signal to the modules.
3. A player, such as FluidNEXT Player, that receives the content and airs it at the LED wall's resolution.
4. Cloud management software for schedules, 24/7 monitoring and proof of play.
5. Content produced in the LED wall's formats, not adapted from videos made for TV.
Content for LED walls
A LED wall is often seen in passing, from a distance and for a few seconds: short messages, large text, high contrast and motion designed for the format. A TV video doesn't work on a 30-metre ribbon. FluidNEXT Studios produces content born in the formats it will air in, including 3D and motion graphics for LED walls.
How to make a LED wall pay: advertising and DOOH
A LED wall can pay for itself by selling advertising space. With FluidNEXT, campaigns are sold directly or programmatically through platforms such as Hivestack, Pladway and Framen, counted by impression, and every play is certified by proof of play: the report brands and media agencies require to pay for the campaign.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a LED wall and a video wall?
A video wall is made of several LCD monitors side by side, with visible bezels between them. A LED wall is made of bezel-free LED modules: it can take any shape and size and, in outdoor versions, has the brightness to stay readable even in full sun.
Which pixel pitch should I choose?
It depends on the audience's distance. As a rule of thumb, the minimum viewing distance in metres roughly equals the pitch in millimetres: small pitches for close viewing, larger pitches for facades and large screens seen from afar.
Can I sell advertising on my LED wall?
Yes: direct and programmatic campaigns, sold by impression and certified by proof of play.
Indoor and outdoor LED walls: what changes?
Outdoors you need much higher brightness, water and dust protection and usually larger pitches, because the audience is further away. Indoors, close-up sharpness, power consumption and quiet operation matter more.
What software do I need to run a LED wall?
Digital signage software that handles non-standard resolutions, schedules by time and site, monitoring and proof of play. FluidNEXT runs LED walls, large screens, video walls and monitors from the same cloud schedule.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor LED wall?
Usually yes: in Italy outdoor advertising installations require the municipality's authorisation and must comply with the Highway Code. Rules vary from one municipality to another, so it is worth checking them before the project.
